Moqueca

In Inman Square. It's location had changed, but it wasn't too far away from its original store. The first time I went was for my half anniversary with my boyfriend.

Mango Nana - Mango, Pineapple, Banana & Orange Juice
Fried Yucca With a delicious, secret sauce created by our chef
Coconut Shrimp
Fish Moqueca
Cod Capixaba - Salted cod with hard boiled eggs, plantain & coconut milk.
Feijoada Completa - Brazilian national dish. Black beans stew with fresh & dried meat, pork, sausage & bacon. Served with collard greens, fried plantain, farofa & orange.

Their rice is delicious. I absolutely love it.
I think that they put olive oil and salt when they make it (perhaps it includes garlic, too).
It reminds me of the time I took international cooking class in high school, and a Brazilian friend steamed rice using a pot, putting olive oil and salt in it. Simple and easy.

I searched up and Moqueca is a seafood stew (though vegetarian option was available) that has fish, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and additional ingredients. It's absolutely delicious.

Saw the same waiter again. He was friendlier last time.
Although we sat down around 115, the place started getting crowded around 2pm. The service was a bit slow today, but maybe that's because it's restaurant is now three times as big as the old one (I don't know when they moved, though).

I'm glad that their business is doing well. My boyfriend and I want to go back there again to eat Brazilian crab cake, and I really want to eat their flan, but I'm always full when I finish my meal here!

Radius

Last of Winter 2010 Boston Restaurant Week.

We had our reservation at 8:30 but arrived an hour early, but they let us sit at the bar and we had drinks and munchies (vegetable tempura, which was very good. Carrots, green string beans, zucchini (all delicious) with their original ponzu with yuzu sauce).

Excellent service, though the food was coming out really slowly. The waiters and the servers did a wonderful job keeping us company, though.

Dinner pricing is 33.10

First Course:

Cauliflower Soup
-crispy duck, brioche croutons and romanesco

I really enjoyed the soup. It was warm and the cauliflower taste was great. I don't remember much of the duck, though, but it was amazing.

Arugula and Kohlrabi Salad
-spiced cherries and roasted shallot-yuzu vinaigrette

Main Course (choice of one)

Slow Roasted Pork Loin
-molten polenta, wild mushrooms and star anise jus

Lightly Seared Salmon
-warm lentil salad, local braising greens and cumin vinaigrette

Really good salmon! The lentil was normal, but the braising greens was delicious. I probably enjoyed that green the most out of all the ingredients for this meal. Good outer layer of Salmon.

Crispy Tofu
-soba noodle and seaweed salad, pickled daikon, spicy pineapple
and shiso puree
My boyfriend and his friends had this. The soba noodle was green (I'm assuming seaweed was put into the buckwheat?). The daikon nor the spicy pineapple and shisho puree were not the emphasis of the meal, I thought.

Dessert (choice of one)

Butterscotch Panna Cotta
-strawberry mint compote

Really good. Definitely better than the carrot cake I had. It was really really good.. I didn't have the mint compote, but the panna cotta was real good.

Spiced Carrot Cake
-cream cheese frosting, mascarpone, spiced raisins
and pickled walnuts

I had this one, but it was okay. The spiced carrot puree? was sour and interesting... Mascarpone was the best part. The spiced raisins (regular raisin and golden raisin) and pickled walnuts were interesting, as well.

The menu had some additional parts to it, too. My boyfriend and his friends ordered dishes off the menu like tuna tar tar and sweetbread -- they seemed to have enjoyed it.

I'd say overall, it was a bit salty. but suited my taste.

Our waiter said that the menu changes every three months or so. The chef, Michael Schlow, is a really good friend of the Oishii chef, so he's got some Japanese influence.

I would give a high rating. Definitely worth the Restaurant Week price.

Mike's Pastry

Ricotta chocolate covered.

Just delicious. I love the ricotta cream. It's so good.. and chocolate blends together perfectly.

Giacomo's (again)

Antipasto: provolone cheese, sopressatta, bresola, roasted peppers, stuffed peppers and vinegar marinated vegetables
1/2 lobster, clam, mussel with linguine.

I had my boyfriend do all the work for getting the lobster meat off its shells.
YUMMM.

Arrow Street Creperie

It was delicious! Going for lunch on thursday wasn't too bad (in terms of line). We got to sit right away, too.

I got Californian, which usually has fresh avocado, mozzarella, basil walnut pesto, turkey, bacon, tomatoes, field greens and dijon balsamic sauce. Instead of the two meats, turkey and bacon, I got two fried eggs replaced instead. It was DELICOUS! I loved it. I love avocado, and I love eggs! I had really wanted to eat eggs, so maybe that is adding some points to the overall experience I had today. Good crepe!

Greek Yogurt

I'm into Greek yogurt right now.
Chobani got me in.
It's SO delicious!

Decided to try other brands, though, to be adventurous.
-Brown Cow Farm Greek Yogurt (Blueberries, Plain) Ok.
-Chobani (blueberries, peach, pomegranate, strawberries) Super good. the BEST.
-Fage Total 0% (Plain) Very good mixed with honey or jam, and/or cereal.
-Trader Joe's Greek Style Nonfat Yogurt (Blueberries, Pomegranate): it's SO creamy. But what does "Greek style" mean? Also, there's no real fruit inside.
-Trader Joe's Greek Style Yogurt (Honey) Really good, but it's not nonfat.
-Trader Joe's Organic Greek Style Nonfat Yogurt (Honey)
-Yoplait Greek yogurt (blueberries)

I'll keep on adding my variety onto the list as I expand my menu.

Kaze

Kaze in Boston Chinatown.
Not authentic shabu shabu, but I was very pleased with the meal.

Choose meat bouillon, with beef hotpot and steamed rice. The rice is definitely not Japanese, but I ate it all anyway. I hadn't had shabu shabu in a long time, so that made the meal more delicious. I really like going to Kaze because I know I'll get lots of vegetables when I go there. Good vitamin! They also have other meat choices like lamb and chicken. I think that's pretty special to have lamb -- or maybe I'm thinking this because there is no lamb shabu shabu in Japan.

Good stuff, though.

Mr. Bartley's

At Harvard Square.
It's not just a burger place, but actually they have sandwiches, wraps, salad, and much more. Well known for their sweet potato fries and onion rings, and apparently, frappes, too!

The Jackie Onassis -- with hummus and tabbouleh with lettuce and tomato. I really wanted guacamole, so I asked for it on the side. Had it with rice and beans. The wrap was soft, and it felt fresh to have. I liked the tabbouleh -- it wasn't a disaster to eat. The guacamole, which came in a tiny plastic cup needed some salt fix to it. The rice and bean, too, actually.

I had a bite of the sweet potato fries. Thought it was okay. The potato was really sweet, though, and tasty. My boyfriend says that the onion rings here is very different from others because it's less flaky, and you can actually taste the onion.

I went there around noon, but it was my breakfast, and so I didn't feel like eating a burger. I really wanted to eat their burger, though, so I'm going back and eating it some time! I must remember that there's a 7 ounce extensive burger menu on the wall, too, and their menu is not limited to the menu list the waiters give us.

I'm not going with the guacamole burger next time. Perhaps mozzarella or feta cheese burger. Oh yeah, medium done burger was pretty pink. that's one thing to keep in mind.

Addis Red Sea

3/22/10
Addis Red Sea
Went here for our first date with my boyfriend and came back after 11 months.

Appetizer:
Dibulbul tips - stir-fried marinated gound beef mixed with onions, green peppers, and herbs.
Very herby and juicy beef. A bit small for $7 because it's just two mini burgers (without buns) but it was good.

Addis Red Sea Special Combo - Doro wot, doro alcha, lega tibs, zenge (exotic beef stew), house slad and gomen wot. for two.
We aren't very adventerous people so we got the same thing we did a year go. The exotic beef stew it pretty good, it's a bit spicy. The salad (diced tomato) is the best part because it refreshens your spicy tongue and the aroma in your mouth after having different kinds of dishes.

Very satisfying meal!

Grotto

3/20/10
Grotto in Beacon Hill for Restaurant Week.
Extensive menu because they offer their entire menu for restaurant week. Nice and cozy place. A bit dark, and it's hard to find if you didn't know of the restaurant, but nice restaurant overall.

Bread: a bit dried white bread with spicy olive oil.

Primi:
Insalata. Baby arugula, parma prosciutto, reggiano parmesan, Lemon.
The Lemon flavor dominated the salad and it was a bit too much for me. Not much prosciutto offered. The parmesan slices were delicious.
Carroza. Pan toasted buffalo mozarella, baby spinach, black olives, small tomatoes, capers.
The salad was warm and nice, and I liked their black olives. The buffalo mozarella was in between bread and the portion of the mozarella was very small.

Secondi:
Carne. Grilled beef tenderloin, reggiano risotto, asparagus, red wine sauce
The medium done beef was good. a bit dry, but the red wine sauce definitely helped. The risotto was great. a bit of salt would have helped bring out the overall flavor.
Zafferano. Crab ravioli, asparagus, almonds, saffron
The ravioli tasted delicious with very crabby flavor. I didn't get to taste the almond part of it, though.

Dolce:
Cioccolato. Melting chooclate cake and vanilla ice cream
The melting choc cake and ice cream were both HUUUGE. the chocolate cake was definitely too sweet, but having the ice cream helped. The ice cream could be a little better, though. It was very milky.
Budino. Banana bread pudding, carmel ice cream, walnuts.
Had the ice cream changed to vanilla My boyfriend enjoyed the bread pudding, though!

The portion was HUGE except for the ravioli. Other dishes like their Spaghetti Meatballs and Grotto's insanely fabulous tomato sauce had so much, but the person eating it didn't seem to have enjoyed the herby meatballs and there was a lot of spaghetti left on his plate.

Top of the Hub

3/13/10
Top of the Hub with my girl friends for a girls night out before spring break!
Our reservation was at 8:00pm for the high reservation demand at this restaurant.
The scenery was beautiful -- we faced outside facing Charles River, MIT, and Harvard. The waitor first "showed" us around Boston as we took a seat at our table.

The restaurant was energetic with lots of customers. Many couples and family, too (on a Wednesday night!). It wasn't too loud or anything, but it was perfect.

Bread: white bread and brown bread with raisins. Surprisingly the white bread was better.

First course:
Romaine wedge Creamy herb dressing, Cherry tomato, Crispy Westphalian Ham
It was just a typical salad that was put together elegantly. The romaine lettace was very fresh and crispy, though.
or
Tomato Bisque Great hill blue cheese fritter
The blue cheese is not a big part of it. Bisque over the salad, for sure.

Second Course:
Seared scallops. Warm fingerling potato salad, salsa verde, chorizo emulsion
The scallops were AMAZING. Nicely roasted and it was perfect. The potato salad wasn't something like a potatoe salad. Roasted sliced potatoes with herbs.
or
Grilled colorado 12oz lamb chop. Roasted garlic, calamata olives sauce, spinach and goat cheese lasagna
None of us had this.
or
Hand cut tagliatelle pasta. Shrimp scampi, parmesan cream, basil lemon oil.
My friend added salt to it and that added a lot of flavor to it.

Dessert:
Creme Brulee
Great. Big. Very sweet, though. My friend couldn't finish it all beacuse it was so rich. Vanilla beans visible!
or
Cherry napoleon. Kirsch brandy anglaise
The pie crust wasn't the greatest. But I did like the cheese and the cherry part of it.

L'Espalier

3/15/10
L'Espalier with my boyfriend for Boston Restaurant Week.
We went there for a 5:30 reservation, arrived early so we sat down at the salon for about 10 minutes. We got a corner table, but people watching over Boylston Street was fun.

Hor Dourves: Layered smoked salmon with cream cheese. Goat cheese puff.

Bread: selection of bread: milk bread, rosemary focaccia, and maple nut. Whipped butter.

First course: I got Roasted red pepper, endive and feta salad with chickpea fritter and black olive vinaigrette. Red pepper was not memorable, but I liked the feta cheese nicely mixed with endive. Chickpea fritter was not as tasty as I thought it could have been. The olives in the salad was delicious -- it was probably the best part of the salad. My boyfriend ordered Macomber turnip soup with Parisiennes of root vegetables; chicken and black truffle boudin. He loved it. I can't remember the chicken, though. Overall, the soup was delicious

Main Course: Seared Scottish salmon with saffron risotto and grilled asparagus; white anchovy vanaigrette. The anchovy wasn't too strong. The risotto wasn't outstanding, but the outer layer of the salmon was delicious! Not dry at all and good cooking. Roasted pork loin with Puy lentils, baby carrots and roasted pearl onions Madeira and thyme jus. The pork loin was a bit dry. It was cut about 1cm thick, a bit dry. The lentils were really small pieces. We liked the salmon better than the pork.

Dessert: Layered carmel chocolate cream with almond croustillant and orange foam I did not remember the orange foam at all. Layered carmel chocolate cream was good. The chef (Korean) put sea salt on part of it, and my friend didn't like that, but I thought it went well with the carmel. Blood orange, guava, and vanilla, partfait with lychee foam wasn't anything like a parfait, but it looked more like a babaloa cake. It was elegant.

To take home: a coconut cookie.
